Teaching Methodologies
We have modernised the classic Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach by leveraging our proprietary technology to bring math to life for students. We start with relatable examples and gradually move on to abstract ideas, utilising various visual, interactive, and gamified features to help students understand abstract concepts and internalise the problem-solving process.
Concrete
Explore a math concept by interacting with our animated courseware and gamified content.
Pictorial
Create visual representations of the math concept by drawing diagrams and models.
Abstract
Link the visual representations with math symbols and equations to solve math problems.
Our innovative approach fosters high-order thinking and problem-solving skills by encouraging students to apply math concepts to different everyday scenarios. This engaging and meaningful learning experience inspires students to feel confident and excited about math.
Our Spark Education Curriculum
Spark Math is designed to build higher-order thinking, not just correct answers. Our curriculum specialists use the CPA approach and question-based learning to develop genuine mathematical reasoning. With an extensive question bank and real-world learning scenarios, each child follows a path suited to their own level.

Sparks Math is a structured math enrichment program for children ages 5 to 12, running from P0 through P6. Rather than drilling procedures, we build genuine number sense — the ability to understand why math works, not just how to complete a calculation. Classes are small groups with live instruction, taught in Kerrisdale, Vancouver.
-
CPA stands for Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract — a three-stage sequence for teaching any math concept. Children first solve a problem using physical objects they can hold, such as counters or blocks. They then represent the same problem visually, usually with a bar model or diagram. Only then do they move to numbers and symbols. Because each stage builds on the one before, children understand the reasoning rather than memorising steps. Every Sparks Math lesson follows this sequence.

Singapore Math is a teaching approach that prioritises depth over coverage — fewer topics per year, taught until genuinely mastered. It relies heavily on visual problem-solving, particularly the bar model, and on building strong number sense before moving to procedures. Its reputation comes from Singapore's consistently high international math rankings. Sparks Math is inspired by the Singapore Math approach and adapted for children learning within the British Columbia curriculum.

Number sense is a child's intuitive understanding of how numbers relate to each other — knowing that 7 is 3 away from 10, or that 48 + 25 can be solved by making 50 first. It is not the same as knowing math facts by heart. A child with strong number sense can estimate, spot when an answer looks wrong, and choose a sensible strategy. Children with weak number sense often calculate accurately but cannot tell when they have made an error. Building number sense is the foundation of our curriculum.

Yes. Competition classes run 2 hours and go deeper into problem-solving and contest-style questions — logic puzzles, pattern recognition, and multi-step problems beyond the standard curriculum. There is no gifted-entry gate; any motivated child who wants the challenge can join.
